NaNoWriMo – 2017
It is that time of the month again where I join with other writers to discuss the “dark side” of being a writer. Actually, that might be a bit of a strong term, but it will do for now. On the first Wednesday of every month Insecure Writer’s Support Group (#IWSG) posts one or two subject questions so we can talk about our doubts and the fears that we have conquered as writers. We can discuss our struggles and triumphs then offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling with their own writing.
This month’s question:
- Win or not, do you usually finish your NaNo project? Have any of them gone on to be published?
Let me explain NaNo for the readers who are not familiar. The full term is NaNoWriMo which is short for National Novel Writing Month. During November of every year, writers around the globe sit down to write a novel in thirty days. Sound easy? NOT! The goal is to crank out 50,000 words in a mere thirty days, and if you want one day a week off you have to manage 2,000 everyday of the month. It is, to say the least, an insane challenge.
On to the questions. Do I finish NaNo? I have only participated once before and it kicked my butt out the door by day 10. November is just plain HARD. It is a month when my job intensifies and life just pulls in too many directions. I am trying again this year so I’ll let you know the results. Needless to say, nothing has been published ——

I wonder why they chose November, considering it tends to be busy for most people?

I have wondered the same thing. A few years ago I decided that February was a better a month so I started 28 Days of Writing which is a writing challenge that is run through Leap Into Writing. February is a great month to get back into writing after the long haul of the holidays.

NaNo is a difficult challenge, and it sounds like you’re hitting it with a great attitude. Even if you don’t get all 50,000, at least some words were written. That’s all that counts.

Hi K.J. Best of luck with NaNoWriMo this time around! I remember the first time I tried it, my fingers ached as I wasn’t used to so much typing! It’s great when you know other people who are participating as that’s very motivating. Thanks for stopping by my blog – it’s good to meet you. 🙂

Hi, K.J. I’m making the rounds visiting fellow IWSG members today. How nice that you started by explaining what NaNoWriMo was! Something that I didn’t think of doing, and yet how obvious the need for an explanation was when I began reading your post. I’ve never participated in NaNo, but I certainly am happy to cheer on the writers who jump in. Good luck with your attempt this!

Someone once taught me that anytime you say the words, “I can’t”, you always add, “YET” to the end. You will never know what you can accomplish once you try your best. Sometimes you actually do that thing you didn’t think you could.

I always say I’m “currently unpublished”. It’s a fact that I plan to change to “published” as soon as possible. Sort of the same idea as “yet” 🙂

The first year I participated in NaNo, it really kicked my butt too. Last year I was more successful. If you’re American, November can be a hard month to write every day during with Thanksgiving and the run up to the holidays.
